6 Documentation and evidentiary records
What SIL providers need to know to prepare for compliance and certification.

From 1 July 2026

Providers delivering Supported Independent Living (SIL) services must now comply with the Supported Independent Living Practice Standards in addition to the existing NDIS Practice Standards. These reforms support the move toward mandatory registration and place increased emphasis on participant safety, governance, supported decision-making and quality service delivery.
What has changed?
The new SIL Practice Standards focus on four key areas:
- Practice Governance – Workers must have the appropriate knowledge, skills and evidence-informed practices.
- Supported Decision-Making – Participants should be supported to make informed decisions.
- Safeguarding – Providers must identify and manage risks while maintaining safe home environments.
- Housing, Tenancy and Support Arrangements – Participants should understand tenancy and service agreements.
Policies Alone Are Not Enough
The NDIS Commission's Evidence Guide makes it clear that compliance extends beyond written policies.
- Current policies and procedures
- Staff training and competency records
- Operational systems reflecting documented policies
- Evidence processes are implemented
- Continuous monitoring and quality improvement
What Should Providers Do Now?
- Review governance documentation
- Update policies and procedures
- Review tenancy and service agreements
- Confirm staff training records
- Identify compliance gaps
- Ensure evidence is available
